Students Dance for 12 Hours to Raise Money for Children’s Hospital

IMG_1894Hundreds of students cheered at the top of their lungs when Texas THON leaders revealed the final fundraising numbers – more than $175,000 raised for a local children’s hospital.

A Year’s Worth of Fundraising

THON spends all year raising money for their cause with studentlate-night fundraisers and feeding frenzies, such as their popular Pancake Night.

But every spring students gather for the biggest THON event – a massive dance party.

A 12-Hour Dance Party

THON has chapters across the country that celebrate all their fundraising with one final event.

“The year culminates in our 12-hour no-sitting Dance Marathon at Gregory Gym where all of our registered “Miracle Makers” stand and dance for the kids,” explains Kristin Sheard, Texas THON’s Partnership Director.

To keep everyone energized, there were tons of games, contests and events. Students kept everything organized by checking their Allcal app for performances, meal times, and pop-up contests.

Plus, on the top of every hour, everyone gathered in the middle of the gym to perform a massive group dance.

“Those of us not musically inclined like to say that bad dancing saves lives!”

The dance featured popular tracks from Beyonce, N’Sync, and even Disney movies. But amongst all the fun, the Texas THON team also made sure people took the time to remember why they were there – to raise money for sick kids and their families.

“Everyone’s favorite part of the day is when we have “Miracle Families” from the hospital come to meet the students and share their stories,” Sheard says. “At the end of the 12 hours, we reveal our final fundraising total for the year and everyone ugly cries happy tears.”

Students raised a total of $175,061 dollars, more than $70,000 dollars more than they raised in 2015.
